Welcome

Temple Baptist Church is a God-focused, Bible-based intergenerational community that seeks "To Know Christ and Make Him Known" by bringing the gospel to our community and partnering with them in changing our city and world around us.

Our worship at Temple Baptist is traditional but with a focus on bringing form and structure from the early church and bridging it with music and themes that have existed throughout Christianity's time. Our music and worship seeks to weave theological truths together with modern worship music and traditional hymns to bring a balanced, creative, and thought provoking worship service week to week.

Join us for our 9:45 Bible study classes for people of any age as we explore God's word and fellowship amongst each other or any of our small groups throughout the week.

We now also offer a Hispanic ministry to cater to the needs of Wilmington's growing spanish-speaking population. Join us on Sunday, at 6:00pm for our Hispanic ministry's service.

You may want to be apart of our community outreach ministries like our Helping Hands Ministry which seeks to serve the hungry and homeless around Wilmington by providing them with meals, blankets, and clothing on a weekly basis.

Lastly, We welcome you to our website and hope that you join us for one of our future worship services.

History of Temple Baptist Church

In the early 1920’s, Baptist leaders in Wilmington realized that a new Baptist church was needed to serve the families in growing neighborhoods. In 1923 a group of dedicated Christian men mortgaged their homes to raise the money needed to buy property at the corner of 17th and Market Street to serve as the location for the newly chartered Temple Baptist Church. The white frame church building was expanded several times as the membership grew and programs and ministries increased. During the Depression, it was noted in church records that “despite all hardships and handicaps, the church has gone steadily on and every year the church has shown an encouraging increase…No one can study the record or become familiar with the personnel, spirit and work of the church without feeling that the Lord guided in the organization and that his Good Hand has been upon the church…”

Many changes have occurred in Wilmington since the 1920’s, as Temple Baptist Church has remained steadfast in its faithfulness. Countless lives have been touched throughout the history of this congregation as all have worked to honor the mission of Temple itself: To Know Christ and To Make Him Known. The doors of Temple remain open to everyone, extending a warm welcome that reflects an abiding love of Jesus and gratitude to God for His guidance and protection.
